Hello, I’m Dr Yasser Buchana, (PhD).

I am a researcher and data scientist with a focus on Innovation and Digital Transformation.

More About What I do

Championing Innovation for Sustainable Development

I am (currently) a senior research specialist at the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII), a division of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in Cape Town, South Africa.

I have a PhD in Information Systems from the University of Cape Town, and a Masters (Cum-Laude) in Information Systems from the University of the Western Cape, where i also obtained my bachelors degree in Computer Science.

I am deeply interested in the intersection of science, technology, and innovation and how these disciplines can be used to drive sustainable and inclusive economic development in developing countries.

Expertise

My Key Areas of Expertise

I specialise in using research and data science to explore how science, technology, and innovation (STI) can address real-world development challenges. I’m particularly passionate about the role of information technology in enabling digital transformation across economic sectors. My work focuses on turning data into actionable insights that drive inclusive solutions and support sustainable growth.

Innovation Measurement Research

For the past eight years, I’ve led innovation measurement work at the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) at the HSRC. My work on innovation measurement has largely focused on understanding trends and patterns of innovation in various economic sectors, notably the agricultural sector. This has included the development of a national innovation survey for South Africa, and the development of a national innovation survey for the agricultural sector. Engament with stakeholders including government, industry, academia and firms.

Data Science & Analytics

While at CeSTII, I have applied advanced data science techniques—such as clustering algorithms, dimensionality reduction, and predictive modeling—to analyse complex national innovation datasets. My work has supported both academic research and policy development, with findings published in peer-reviewed journals and HSRC policy briefs.

Digital Transformation

At CeSTII, I’ve led efforts to advance digital transformation through improved data management systems and strengthened data governance practices. Building on this experience, I’ve worked with science granting councils and research institutions across Africa to support their digital journeys—offering capacity development in areas such as data infrastructure, governance frameworks, and digital innovation.

Policy Analysis & Development

My innovation measurement research work directly supports the South African government in developing evidence-based innovation policies. I analyse data to inform strategies that promote innovation and the diffusion of technology across sectors.

Let's Work Together.

If you're working on strengthening Africa’s innovation systems, building digital capabilities, or shaping inclusive STI policy — let’s connect. I welcome opportunities to share insights, collaborate on research, and contribute to transformative initiatives across the continent.
